Niagara Falls without water?

Currently Niagara Falls carry a flow of 110 thousand cubic meters per minute, something like 3000 tons of water per second. But this was not always so, in 1848 the cataracts stopped transporting water, the culprit of this was a large piece of ice that is jammed in the narrowest channels of the river. After 30 hours the ice melted and the water flowed again.
