The orchid is considered the national flower of Venezuela, its colors are beautiful. On May 23, 1951, by official decree, it was declared as the national flower, after an exhaustive investigation by the Venezuelan Society of Natural Sciences. It is popularly known as Flor de Mayo because in the 19th century the town used it to decorate the "Cruz de Mayo".
