Hey everyone!
Today, I'm reviewing an IPA called Virmalised from the brewery Põhjala. This beer was quite expensive so, I expect a quality beer! Põhjala is a familiar brewery for me, since I have tried some of their products before. Usually they don't let you down.
Description of the beer:
"Virmalised translates as Aurora Borealis (The Northern Lights) - A powerful IPA with a citrus kick, Virmalised uses a blend of hops, including Citra and Azacca."
Brewery facts:
- The brewery's name Põhjala means "northern realm".
- Founded in 2011 by four Estonian beer enthusiasts.
- Soon they were joined by head brewer Chris Pilkington, from the Scottish craft brewery Brewdog.
- Põhjala has a particular focus on porters, barrel ageing, and ingredients from the forests of Estonia.
- 70% of Põhjala's production is exported to over 30 countries.
- In 2018 the company invested nearly 4.9 million euros in moving production to a new brewery.
Here's a list of their most well known beers:
Virmalised
Must Kuld
Öö
Uus Maailm
Jõuluöö
CocoBänger
Meri
Kosmos
Appearance: hazy golden color with a big white head.
Smell: tropical fruits, caramel.
Mouthfeel: medium body, medium carbonation.
Taste: taste follows the nose: tropical fruits, caramel. Hoppy with a bitter finish.
Verdict: A well balanced beer, juicy and fruity. The alcohol is masked beautifully. A brew for all the hop-heads. Very appealing bottle with the northern lights on the label. I can't find anything wrong with this beer, Põhjala delivers again! It's a very nice solid IPA! My rating: 4 out of 5.
