What is the purpose of life? This is an age-old question that has occupied the thoughts of mankind since the dawn of time. Why are we here? Do our lives serve any greater aim? Are we just here to go about our lives scurrying like mice day in day out?
As humans we have this innate desire that our lives have to have some greater meaning. Our sense of superiority to all other creatures and perhaps our mortality in the face of all our capabilities and achievements probably fuel this insatiable desire for our lives to have meaning.
We are to live our lives so we can speak from our graves, that our lives will leave a legacy.
The best way to live our lives, that both brings fulfillment and a sense of purpose, is to live for others. We should live a life of self-emptying where we strive to help and improve the lives of the people around us. There is nothing as fulfilling as being able to make some impact, no matter how little, in the lives of others. Whatever chance we get, let us use to improve the lives of the people of the people around us. Those who need some form of help or another.
Our actions do come back to us and those around us in one form or the other. In fact the peace and content we feel when we are there for others often exceeds the costs.
This if the way we are going to change the world, if we are to extend to others the same kind of treatment we would like to receive ourselves.
