Today we buy something and it is replaced within no time ,whether it is a gadget or a pair of shoes. I look at the dish washer in the kitchen and know that they last 3 -4 years before something breaks and it is too costly to repair and you just buy another one. This is all too common it today's world and something we have all had to get used to.
Thirty years ago I bough a pair of boots and had no idea I would still be wearing them today. I wear them at least once a week and sometimes more during the winter times. They are hand made from leather and have a truck tire sole. Let us put it this way they are well made and the company is still in business. You would have thought that having made something so good they would have run out of customers as replacements are not required.
The tread on the sole has gone down a fraction and nothing to worry about as they will last another 20 or 30 years and will out live me. I love them as they are comfortable and robust and wouldn't say indestructible ,but they are a pride possession today. I have another pair which I haven't worn yet as they were that good I bought a back up. Little did I know I wouldn't need them.
I have a problem buying footwear as I have big feet and normally have to take whatever fits and not worry too much what they look like. How many shop assistants have come running up to me in the past for me to say have you a size 14 or 15 in these? These though fit like a glove and have worn them at least twice a week for over 30 years. They were my bundu bashers when I was chasing crooks in South London many years ago. When I wore these I knew I would be out chasing someone and everyone knew what kind of a day I had ahead of me.
How many things have you bought that are still surviving thirty years on. I can think of jewelry, but when it comes to clothing or footwear there is nothing that springs to mind. If they had I haven't worn them hence they would have lasted the test of time.
