Hi I'm Danny! I'm travelling around the world! Follow me.
Hello everyone, sorry I've not updated you for a few days. The internet has been really bad. In my last post I went swimming in a Piranha infested river. Today is my last day in The Pantanal.
The Pantanal can get very hot - the temperature never seemed to drop below 30 degrees for my whole trip. To keep cool the locals enjoy tereré throughout the day between their meals. It's very similar to mate which is popular in South America, but tereré is served cold and traditionally enjoyed out of a shoe horn!
The guy in this photo has a bottle with ice in it - he uses this to top up the drink and keep it ice cold. The environment is tough and sweaty - whilst the Pantanieros graft extremely hard they also take regular breaks to get their energy back and cool down.
The Pantanal is full of wildlife and animals whether you are taking a boat or just sitting around. Here are some I haven't included in my other posts..
When you visit the Pantanal you'll witness an astonishing number of birds - one of the symbols of this area is the Jabiru stork. The Jabiru is the tallest flying bird in South Central America and it's enormous.
The wingspan of these birds can reach 9 ft long.
The Jabiru with their white body, black head, and red neck are very distinctive. You can see the size of the neck in this picture - in the Tupi-Guarani language that is spoken in the area Jabiru literally means "swollen neck".
I found a video of a Jabiru flying back to its nest...
I had mixed feelings leaving the Pantanal - incredibly happy to have experienced some of the best wildlife experiences of my life, but sad to be leaving.
As usual we were treated to one final perfect sunset as we drove off.
