Here is my theory, and it is certainly not scientific! I believe humanity is at a turning point. I believe the Mayans NAILED it, that 2012 was then end of an era. It was the end of "being led." Or it should have been, it is not like turning a page it is a human by human realization of our right and responsibility to self govern. We do not need another leader, we must learn to lead ourselves and let others live according to their inner compass. Of course, currently most humans have turned their moral compass off and live by such solid ethics as "I'm just doing my job" and "Not my circus, not my monkeys" and other utterly useless cliches.
