Cyber-bullying is a growing problem as people of all ages become more connected via the internet and cell phones. Cyber-bullies torment their victims and often say things that they would not say face-to-face.
Why are Cyber-Bullies Cowards
Cyber-bullies hide behind technology as they inflict pain on others. Because they don’t physically witness the pain they cause, they tend to be harsh with their words and accusations. Many hide behind fake identities and user profiles.
Cyber-bullying is generally ongoing and even when asked to stop, the perpetrator continues to bombard their victim with emails, texts and public comments. If they are known to the victim, and a face-to-face meeting is requested, they decline as they can’t handle a confrontation. They prefer to express their venom through a screen.
Cyber-Bullying and Inappropriate Behaviour
Cyber-bullying is never appropriate and all cyber-bullies exhibit inappropriate behaviour patterns. These often reflect their cowardice and include the following types of communication:
- extreme bad language and cursing
- sexual content, innuendos and images
- repeated derogatory comments on the victim’s character or work
- criticism of photography, writing and other personal expressions
- criticism of appearance and dress
They write things that they would not have the guts to say in person. Because of its nature, cyber-bullying communication has the potential to spread virally across the internet and this can expose the victim to shame and embarrassment.
Calling a Cyber-Bully to Account for their Actions
A coward shrinks from confrontation. When a cyber-bully is known to their victim, it can be helpful to demand a physical meeting. It is best to do this alongside a person of authority such as a school principal, a pastor or a lawyer. If a meeting is refused, it is still possible to confront the bully by approaching them unannounced. This should be done with care and a bully who has threatened violence should not be handled in this manner.
Threats of legal action against defamatory communication and harassment are another avenue that can be used to put an end to cyber-bullying.
Responding to Cowardly Cyber-Bullies
Never respond in like manner to a cyber-bully. Retaliating with hurtful comments and accusations will only prolong the problem. Rather block them in every way possible and report their behaviour to someone in authority. This will be more effective than retaliating directly.
Cyber-bullying is never alright and it should be remembered that all bullies are cowards. They enjoy the feeling of power that bullying gives them and have little consideration for the immense pain and heartache they cause their victims.
