Roatan is an island about 20 miles off of the coast of northern Honduras. It lies in the Caribbean sea surrounded by an extensive coral reef. It is visited nearly every day by cruise ships, of course many national and international tourists vacation here on a regular basis. I believe Roatan along with the Mayan ruins at Copan are the most well known tourist attractions Honduras has to offer.
Most people on Roatan speak English so that is not a problem, Roatan and the rest of the Bay Islands which also comprise Utila, Guanaja and some smaller islands were initially colonized by English people who came here mostly from the Cayman Islands in the 19th century, so you see a lot of people who have British ancestors, I think some are even descended from pirates.
But really Roatan is a very beautiful place, it is worth the effort to go there.
