Being One in Marriage
If each spouse is always trying to look out for the interests, comfort, and happiness of the other, love will grow. Wise words.
Marriage unity is an important foundation for successful parenting. If a couple does not support each other, it will greatly weaken the influence they can have on their children. However, if they are humble and try to achieve unity, they will be able to teach invaluable lessons to their children in both formal and informal situations.
If one spouse is sincerely trying to live according to the principles and standards of the gospel, and these include love without measure and due respect for the other's free will, then marriage may not fail. However, if both are willing to honor and live according to the covenants they have made, marriage will certainly become a heavenly marriage.
Obedience to the commandments helps us achieve this unity in marriage. When a couple repents of their wrong actions, tries to overcome all imperfections, and strives to live in righteousness, they can become one. A marriage is not always immune to problems, but it can be a peaceful marriage.
A couple can live in poverty, illness, disappointment, failure, and even the death of a loved one, but nothing can rob them of peace. Marriage can be successful as long as selfishness is not given a foothold.
