In this world of Social Media, false rumors spread like wildfire, and some gullible people believe in them without doing any research. I have even seen people posting obviously photoshopped pictures on Facebook, thinking they are real. However, some of such posts contain news, which you can't immediately tell if they are false, although if you are like me, you would have a tendency to doubt their authenticity.
So, what do I do in situations where I doubt the authenticity of a news. Well, in those situations, I head straight to Snopes.com, to check it. There, you can search an article by just typing a few keywords, and if possible, Snopes.com would come up with the authenticity results for that news.
As an example, someone posted this on facebook,
https://www.disclose.tv/we-blew-up-wtc-7-on-911-cia-agent-confesses-on-deathbed-314882
I immediately got the idea that it should be some conspiracy theory based fake nonsense, and therefore headed straight to Snopes.com. There, I typed the following in its search bar.
911 cia agent confesses on deathbed
As a result, I got the following,
Now, If I click on that link, here is what I get,
So, Snopes.com clearly states that this news was false. If you want to read the explaination of Snopes.com in full, you can visit https://www.snopes.com/cia-agent-confesses-wtc7/.
When I gave the Snopes' link to the person who posted this, he was still in denial, saying that US government should just be covering this up. So, some people just believe what they really want to believe, despite you giving them the ultimate proof.
There was also an extremely stupid rumor flying around that Iceland would be paying handsome amount of money to the men willing to come to their country and marrying their women. I mean you would have to be extremely stupid to believe in that nonsense and yet some people in their 30s were believing this. Can you imagine? If you go to Snopes.com, it will obviously tells you its false, https://www.snopes.com/iceland-pays-immigrants-to-marry-icelandic-women/.
There might be other similar sites, but Snopes.com is definitely the most popular one. So, next time, if someone post some stupid nonsense fake news on Social media, slap them back with a Snopes.com link, to debunk them!
