at least in my home country many people are skipping having a family because of the same consumerism. They blame the government, or white people, or corporations for the fact that they can't afford a family but the reality of the situation is that all of these jerks are living a much more expensive life than they can actually afford. The latest gadgets are meant to be owned by EVERYONE, they are meant to be bought by the people with a ton of money. If you don't have a ton of money you get a 2 year old Samsung phone, not a $1700 latest and greatest phone with two folding screens and a processor more powerful than my laptop.
