Is change a good thing simply for the sake of change?
Most of us have ever heard the phrase change is a good thing. This is because change often initiates a new beginning.
Go back to school.
Get a new job.
Change is a good thing.

What if that change doesn't have a positive impact, or any impact at all?
What if you're just making a change for the sake of change itself? A lateral change.
Does that make any good sense?
The reason I bring this up is because one of my workmates is about to buy a new car. She is a very pretty young blonde waitress that drives a Toyota SUV currently. Her car is a 2007 model and it has 125,000 miles on it.
She plans to sell that car before she buys the new one.
The new car is a little sporty Pontiac. It is a 2007 model and it has 128,000 miles on it.
WHAT??!!
I asked her why she is selling her car and buy a new one considering that her car runs very well and hasn't had any major issues. A Toyota is likely to make it to 200,000 miles if it doesn't have any particular problems.
Pontiac's typically don't last as long as Toyota's, though there are a few models that I like.
Does that change makes sense to you? I guess she's feeling bored. In reality she may be able to save a few bucks per month on gas by switching from a larger SUV to a smaller car but she also doesn't drive very much.
I don't think it's a good idea.
I see a lot of people making changes like this that don't make sense to me. Aside from the idea of simply making a change, they don't leave room for forward progress.
One of my roommates just bought a really nice couch that he got a great deal on. He bought at the thrift store and I am really pleased with the couch, personally.
What I didn't realize is that he was going to get rid of the couch that he already had in his room. The couch that he already had was a nice leather couch that doesn't have any major issues with it at all. To tell you the truth I think I like the weather couch better even though I also really like the new couch as well.
He was actually going to just put the couch outside but I told him that I would sell it on Craigslist and split the money with him. Why not?. I think we have like 6 or 7 couches at this point. We might as well sell a few.
Still, I have to ask myself. Why did he buy that couch if he already had a really nice couch?
I guess the obvious answer is really just boredom. She's probably tired of driving the same car everyday. He's probably tired of sitting on the same couch every day.
You don't want to eat spaghetti every single day for dinner, so you make meatloaf, or hamburgers, or chicken wings.
You don't want to wear the same pair of pants everyday either, so you go shopping and buy green pants, and brown pants, and black pants.
It makes sense if you think about it like that.
However, it still leads me to wonder....
Does it make sense to make lateral changes?
