Everyone wants something for free and most people will take advantage of you to get it. This isn't always the case....... however it certainly seemed so when our restaurant had the policy of asking people "How was everything?" before they left.
Ten years ago we used to wait by the front doors when we would see someone leaving, and we would ask them the magic question. Now keep in mind that these are the same people that we had talked to multiple times all throughout out their visit.
There was the man enjoying his glass of wine who had a handshake and a heartfelt pat on the back for me.
There was the woman who whispered to me that our baby back ribs were absolutely heavenly.
They were people enjoying themselves and enjoying our great food and friendly atmosphere.
Once they got to the front door though and were asked that question "How was everything?"....... they completely changed.
"Usually when I come here the food is really good...... but today that hamburger was absolutely inedible."
This from a guy who devoured his burger in five minutes and then told his friend that it was one of the best burgers he'd ever had.
"The steak I got today was all grizzle when usually it's really lean and delicious."
It was a great cut of meat that had no grizzle on it.
We have a policy, you see, to take care of our customers at all costs.
At OUR cost.
That means we will comp your meal if you are unsatisfied.

We used to think that if you WERE satisfied then you would tell us how HAPPY you were with your meal when you left. However we did not take into account how much people love getting things for free.
You know what? Once we stopped asking people "How was everything?".......... then everything was great.
I guess it's sort of sad and funny at the same time.
I hope you liked this one.
