In this fast paced world, we often lose out on more important things due to lack of time.
I've realized that when we are engaged in an important work or if the mind is preoccupied with other activities, most often it is our sleep cycle that takes the hit.
We usually don’t seem to grasp the seriousness of sleep deprivation. Not until we slowly begin to see the adverse effects of lack of sleep after a period of time.
According to the NHLBI,
Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout our life. Getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help protect our mental health, physical health, quality of life, and safety.
Getting good sleep is as important as having a healthy diet or doing exercises.
There are several benefits of good sleep.
Here, I would like to list a few:
- Improves Concentration
Sleep is known to increase a person's concentration levels. A bad night's sleep can affect your activity for the upcoming day, while a good sleep will not only help you to concentrate better, but you will feel more lively and prepared to face the day.
A study found that short sleep can negatively impact some aspects of the brain function to a similar degree as alcohol intoxication.
- Enhances Mood
Do you feel happier when you've had a good night's sleep?
If you start losing more number of hours of sleep, it not only causes tiredness, but it may begin impacting your judgment skills, creative energy or even problem solving ability. You might begin to see mood fluctuations and it is likely that your stress levels may also become imbalanced.
- Improves Life Expectancy
Sleep has a direct link with the life expectancy of a person. People who sleep lesser number of hours a day, most likely will have a shorter lifespan.
Studies have found people who routinely sleep for fewer than six hours a night have a higher risk of dying sooner than people of a similar age who sleep for seven or eight hours a night.

Getting a good sleep boosts your immune system, hence you are less likely to get ill. Clocking in less hours of sleep is know to increase the chance of acquiring chronic diseases, even a heart disease.

Sleep is a period that allows the brain to process vital information it has acquired during the day. It leads to memory formation, which in turn has a direct link to our ability to remember things.
Sleep has several other advantages, like:
it helps you to maintain your figure, it allows you to have better sex, it makes you look healthier, and it even affects your social interaction.
So the next time you decide to sacrifice your sleep, remember:
over a period of time, these gaps in our necessary sleep cycle will lead to a much bigger impact than we would like!
Our body's biological clock is something we should not mess with. It is better that we start giving more importance to sleep when we still have the time to repair the damage that might have been caused to our body and health.
