when you’re from Cape Town, not born but bred to live the seashore life, it’s so easy to forget the Freestate.
To forget from where you come.
To forget beauty.
We as human, get so accustomed to our surroundings that we often forget to look at the beauty a lot of things in our lives.
We forget to look at nature, we forget to really really LOOK.
When I was younger, a lot of things were wrong in my household. Not wrong like molestation or paedophilia, wrong like abuse and a narcissistic mother.
I wasn’t taught how to love, my depression and anxiety engulfed me from a young age. The golden age of grotesque I call it. It’s hard to see the beauty in anything when you’ve only known sadness. It’s really hard for me not to think about killing myself daily.
ANYWAY, so I lived my teenage life, rushing to get to eighteen. Because then I would be free. I would be free to go wherever I wanted, be whoever I wanted.
But what I forgot is, that not everything needed a filter, that you cannot filter your life and boil it down to one specific moment, when the cage door opens. It is unhealthy to just see the cage in the first place, when you can see so many wild and free things move around you.
But slaves only dream to be King, never to be free.
It’s so easy to forget where you came from when you are at a better destination, it’s easy to forget the things you get to see daily, only because you’re accustomed to seeing them. They’re there, they have always been there. South Africa is a wonderland of beauty and opportunity. But only if you grasp it tightly, if you live with little regrets, when your heart is good, you will be good.
I’ve never been one to believe in karma, or what goes around comes around. But I am one for putting positive energy all around myself, because I cannot afford my long hard road out of hell to mean little to nothing.
And when you surround yourself with negativity, you will be negative. If you surround yourself with awful people, you will start to become awful. Because we are creatures of habit, we are also creatures that adapt to social environments to fit in, to play the part.

OPEN YOUR EYES
see the beauty
Be the beauty
Live a beautiful life
Travel, come back, let your eyes open anew to your beautiful surroundings. Look at nature, REALLY look at it and see something beautiful every day of your life.
You don’t even have to capture it in a picture.
Put away the phone, make memories. Don’t bow down to the god of technology.
