On 11 May, a traveler was running late for his flight with Norwegian Airlines, so he called police and made a fake bomb threat to delay the plane.
The French traveler was librarian, Jacob Meir Abdellak, and he made the call at 5:46am, eight minutes before the flight was scheduled to depart Gatwick Airport in London to Los Angeles.
Police then delayed the plane's departure for 90 minutes to perform a full security check.
When Abdellak made it to the airport, he was "significantly late" and started getting violent when he was prohibited from boarding the plane.
On 22 May, he returned to the airport to catch another flight to Los Angeles, and was arrested for reporting false information involving harm to others.
Investigation disclosed that the phone number used to make the call was the same one Abdellak used to book his flight. When questioned, he said that it was his number, but the SIM card in his phone went missing days before.
On Tuesday, Abdellak was tried at Lewes Crown Court where he pled guilty. And sentenced to 10 months in prison and mandated to pay $160.
Norwegian Airlines made a statement that they "treat all security threats seriously" and "ensure the safety of their customers, crew members, and aircraft always."
