Why is it, That when we prepare for something, We prepare for the worst. Not the best? When We prepare for the rainy days, Rather than the sunny. What a negative outlook on life in general.
What You Focus On Expands
I'm a firm believer in this, When we only focus on the negative aspects. Such as things we hate about our job. They expand. Our negative attitude brings more negative experiences to the table.
Just because your life isn't perfect doesn't mean you need to spend all day focused on it. It's like when I worked at UPS. And Sometimes we would get our volume at the end of the night, Instead of having it balanced out. Many people would get really angry, And on some days I would too. But ultimately IT HAPPENED! And it was OUT OF OUR CONTROL. The only thing now in our control, Was to get the packages loaded. So we could go home and enjoy our weekend.
I remember one day in particular. When My work area was pretty bad off. A couple co workers made snotty comments at me “ Why you so happy Kaylin When we got Fucking screwed tonight?”.
I was all giggly and happy, Despite the crazy night. Once we were done, We got to go home and enjoy our weekend. I was happy because it was Friday, Because we were almost done. And I was grateful that I had a job, And I got paid that day. There seemed to be 10 things to be happy about and only 1 thing to be upset about. Heck, Even then. We were staying later getting more hours = More pay. Plus a little bit of overtime!
I went home happy that night. And I was able to enjoy the rest of my night. While those coworkers, because they let the 1 thing ruin their day, Probably had a crappy Friday night. And who knows. Maybe their whole weekend sucked too.
So one tiny “Inconvenient” moment determined their whole mood for the day. Thats a great way to be happy in life! (Sarcasm)
How do you expect to have opportunities given to you, When you are too focused on the negative?
In a job interview, I'm sure 99.9 % of the time, They will pick that happy looking person. Over the person who doesn't look like they want to be there.
Ultimately if you are focused on the negative, And what could go wrong, You are less likely to get those opportunities.
Focus On What Could Go Right
Think of all the opportunities you probably passed up because you were worried about “What could go wrong.”
Some of the best things in life, Involve quite a bit of discomfort and pain. As well as risk of that embarrassment, Or Other factors that can lead to something “bad” happening.
Take skydiving for example, You could die.
There is always that chance.
But if you only focused on the “dying” part. You probably wouldn't go skydiving. Instead you would stay home.
But if you focused on how fun it could be and how the experience could change your life, You are more likely to go.
Even When It Goes Bad, You Still Win
I like to look at bad things that happen in my life, And try to find that “Silver” lining. As a result. Not a lot of bad things have happened to me, Because I found some kind of learning experience, Or Prerequisite towards something bigger that I wanted. Sure, Somethings in life, Are so bad. (Such as someone passing away.) You probably don't even want to mess with that kind of mindset.
But Other situations, Like Your car not starting, Might actually have a silver lining.
Well your car didn't start.
Maybe something is seriously wrong! Lucky you, It didn't start in the driveway, And didn't stop while you were driving on the freeway!
Another Silver lining: You can get that fixed now, Instead of later. Maybe later you'd be in a worse of financial situation, Then from where you are at now.
This even applies to larger things that happen. You may not even think of them. Whether it's gaining knowledge or experience. You usually get “Something” out of that bad experience.
