I have just read an article from one of my favourite bloggers Hardscrabble Farmer -
I'll refer to him as HF from now on - in which he speculates on the possible origin of the age-old tradition of the Easter Egg hunt.
For those who may not be familiar with this custom, an Easter Egg hunt is where eggs (nowadays chocolate ones but in the past they would have been real hard-boiled, decorated ones) are hidden within a certain area and children will then go out to find them.
According to the article by HF, after winter, when the chickens are free to wander further afield, they will lay their eggs almost anywhere instead of returning to the henhouse.

Rather than let these eggs go to waste HF sets his children the task of patrolling the farmyard and surrounding area collecting up these wayward eggs.
Could this practical annual chore that must have been replicated throughout thousands of farms over the years, have evolved into the Easter Egg hunt? Sounds feasible to me.
