Welcome to Day 5 of On the Plus Side!
On the Plus Side is a series of short stories about real life positive or happy observations that I see every day. The purpose of these stories is to show the community that positive and happy events occur every day and to bring a smile to your face.
All SBD from this series will be donated to The Smith Family who support underprivileged children in their education. So upvote and resteem away!
Celebrating Family
Today was our third Christmas celebration which was with my Nanna at her house, here in sunny old Adelaide.
My Nanna is a great lady, she dedicated her life to helping others and did this in many, many ways. I don't think my family thinks on how much amazing work she did very often, as these days, we're more concerned about making sure she is healthy and looking after herself given that she lives alone.
My Nanna is in her mid-90's, so to be mostly independent still is quite an achievement in itself. What's even more amazing though, is how much of her life was dedicated to the causes that she believes so strongly in.
Looking After at Risk Kids
I have three aunties, and none of them are aunties by blood. You see, my Nanna was a foster carer for most of her adult life. She took in kids that needed help and support from when they were very young. I grew up thinking that they were my aunties by blood until I was old enough to understand that my Nanna had fostered them, and then eventually adopted them.
She treated them as if they were her own kids. So, our family get togethers were always big and rowdy given that they all went on to have their own kids who I grew up alongside. Nanna made sure that these kids had the best that she could provide, and they mostly turned out very well.
Fundraising for World Vision
My Nanna spent many hours raising funds for World Vision. It is a charity that she is very passionate about, and even travelled overseas to see the work that they were doing first hand. She was one of the largest fundraisers that they had for this charity in her community. And World Vision were so thankful for all her hard work that they came to my Nanna and Grandfather's 60th Wedding Anniversary to give a speech about her hard work and say thank you.
Helping the Community
My Nanna was also a great help to her local community. She lived through a time where you knew all your neighbours and pitched in to help whenever you could. To this day, a number of her neighbours are the same people who were there when she bought her house. And they still take the time to check in on each other.
I think my Nanna is the person who gave me my love of helping people and volunteering for worthy causes. She's done so much in her life, and is a real inspiration for her willingness to give freely.
I’ve created the tag #plusside so if you want to read all positive and fun stories I write for this series simply check this tag. And don't forget, all SBD from these posts is donated to a fantastic Australian charity - The Smith Family - so don't be shy with your up votes! Every bit helps!
