Tarantula Hawk is named after the fact that they are hunting tarantulas as their larvae food. Their sting is rated as one of the most painful in the world (though not as painful as a bullet ant). One of the researchers describes the "[...] sting as a direct cause, the excruciating pain just closes down a person's ability to do anything, except, perhaps, screams, only mental discipline does not work in this situation." Tarantula Hawk is an 'official insect' of New Mexico state.
