We should not be idealistic about serving others in our older years. So long as we have the strength, we should use it to the utmist while recognizing it is likely that our abilities will change and become more limited.
In the future I may not be able to practice what I want in life as I am currently doing. I may become mentally or physically disabled, but by God's grace there will be some things I can still do. I frequently see my disabled friends and relatives praying for and encouraging others.
We have to recognize the possibility that insanity might compromise our ability to function. What can we do then? That is a tough question to answer.
A family friend, has lived for decades with severe mental impairment as the result of an injury he recieved in his teen age. He functions on the level of a four-year-old. In many ways it is tragic, yet God continues to use him. Prior to his injury he loved to sing. Now, he sings much of the time. People often talking that he's singing has spoken powerfully to some need they had at that very moment.
God, by his Spirit, is still using him in spite of his disability.
