Have you seen the first video of youtube? Its the infamous "Me at the zoo" by the corner-founder of youth, Jawed Karim. Its a video dating back to 2005. A borderline awkward video on a platform that would eventually become one of the most popular social media platforms in the world.
Rumors have it youtube was supposed to grow into a dating website. People uploaded videos of themselves and also sharing what they are interested in. People scout for what the like through the videos and bam - swipe right! More like message each other.
But look at what it has turned into. A video creation platform that can turn a 15 year old into a creative engineer. The website was acquired by Google just 1 year after Karims video. In 2006 it was bought for 1.6 billion dollars. Any in 2020 it made google roughly 170 billion US dollars. Just imagine!
I mean, last year a 9 year old made millions on the platform. Somewhere around 20 million US dollars on the website. Say that to the investors who didn't want anyhing to do with the dotcom era or the parents who force their children to take extra classes to get their marks up.
But all of this wouldn't happen if YouTube didnt decide to take the opportunity by google. Or maybe all this wouldn't happen if google didnt realize the opportunity they had in hand. Neither would any of this happen if the content creators the opportunity that youtube had.
I think it was Richard Branson who said something along the lines of always say yes to an opportunity and then learn how to do it if you already don't. It's an excellent advice. One that I really love and live by.
It's unimaginable what awaits us beyond the "yes". A land of success and more opportunities. Maybe this one will lead us to our dreams. But if we stood back simply because we aren't sure how to accomplish it we could never get a similar opportunity again.
Its just one simple choice that changes our lives forever. It is on single opportunity that rewrites the legend. A sea of opportunity, just waiting for a guts sailor to take it on.
