Part #1 - Targeting
Most people often do not want to mix their professional and personal lives. But looking in more detail, business processes and functions in the corporate world can help us become more successful people.
History knows many successful personalities, both professionally and personally. But the principles and activities that make a person successful in a given field are close and often overlap. Over the years, many people have been fascinated by the success stories of people like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Elon Musk and others. These people have proven themselves both business and personal and are a role model for millions of people. This is largely due to the application of business principles in their personal lives.
At the core of every company, corporation or organization are people, their decisions, and actions. The strategies and goals of these organizations are set by and executed by people. It is the goals that are the driving force of each organization. The purpose is why a company is created and exists.
Targeting is one of the most important functions in an organization. The goals are set by the desired states and actions that need to be accomplished, namely achieving these goals is the main measure of the success of an organization. In the development stages of a company, short, medium and long-term goals are set, which also sets out a core strategy for action in a timeframe. This principle relies on every organization that wants to be successful and builds in the future.
The progress of the life of a human individual also has major stages of evolution. Assuming that every individual begins to think conspicuously and take decisions to build a sustainable future around his maturity, he has at least 5 stages of development and upgrading. These stages can most easily be framed in decades. Each of these stages can have a different dimension and focus - educational, work-focused or family-based - but with the maturation of each individual and the accumulation of life experience, the goals and often the common strategy change and transform.
Whatever enterprise an individual would be oriented on, however, he would not be successful if he had no clear idea of what he wanted to achieve. Everyone needs to have a focus, know what exactly he wants to achieve, know what time he wants to do, and draw up a relevant action plan. This is where the personal life intertwines with a popular business method for setting goals.
Often even at the corporate level, it is difficult to define goals, not to mention individual level. For this reason, the concept of SMART targets also appears. The origin of this concept is unknown. However, it is known that in the 1950s Peter Drucker used such a classification. Anyway, in a purely practical context, it is important not who is the author of SMART targeting, but what exactly does SMART mean.
SMART is an acronym containing 5 words in English defining the basic dimensions of a goal. They are:
S – Specific;
M – Measurable;
А – Attainable;
R – Realistic;
Т – Time-bound.
"To be successful in life!" - this may be one of the most desired goals put by individuals, but it does not meet any of the criteria. What, however, is a specific or specific purpose? This is an object that contains a specific action. Specifics help focus on specific efforts and clearly identify what it will do.
The measurable goal, on the other hand, means whether a goal is discoverable, what its performance is and when it can be realized. If a process cannot be measured, it can not be managed. The goal should be able to measure progress so that the oncoming change can be seen. How do you see when a goal is achieved? There must be specificity! "I want to run 3 kilometers every Monday" shows the specific target that can be measured. "I want to be a good athlete" is not a measurable formulation. They need to create specific criteria to measure progress towards achieving each set goal.
Attainable. The goal must be neither too easy nor too difficult. When determining a goal that is most important to a particular individual, it should begin by determining how we can do it. They need to develop specific abilities, skills and capacities to achieve the craving goal. One has to look at opportunities previously missed to get the optimum approach to achieving their goals in the future.
Realistic goals. Goals must be within the available resources, knowledge and time of an individual. This means being possible. Everyone has to set goals for which they have the skills and knowledge necessary to carry out their activities. And on the basis of already running resources, create a plan or a way of doing what to do in the future.
Finally, but not least, one goal must be time-oriented. Setting a timeframe for achieving the goal is a must. From tomorrow, for three months to thirty years of age, these are always goals with a deadline. Putting the destination endpoint gives a clear time limit for our upcoming actions. If the expected time is not set, the activity is too vague. This leads to a tendency for things not to happen because we feel we can start at any time. Without a time limit, it may result in postponement or non-commencement of an activity. Time is one of the most important factors in measuring the success of a goal.
It is important to specify, however, that there are primary and secondary objectives. Secondary goals are at the core of achieving the primary goal. They are often more than one. To get the job we want, for example, we need to have the necessary knowledge, qualifications, and experience. And the acquisition of these things is related to the generation of sub-targets of secondary goals. This is why the so-called tree of goals is used in business. A concept for structuring goals in a graphical image, which distributes the goals hierarchically (at separate levels). For the top goal, it is determined to be the most important of strategic importance. This principle can also be successfully applied by ordinary people in their everyday lives.
Although these business processes are designed to facilitate organizations and improve their performance, they are universal and their application is not only in business. However, the purposefulness and gradation of goals of importance is man-made and used by the person, and the specific environment in which they apply is irrelevant. Everyone can managerially approach the processes in their lives. This will be done by setting a goal to become the strategy of action in the near or distant future, and why not all of its life. Then, realizing its basic resources, it will write down every objective and sub-objective that will be needed to reach its primary goal with the utmost importance. Through SMART methodology, it will set specific parameters and time frames to all these goals in order to manage and monitor them, and through the goal, a tree will know the sequence of actions and the importance of each goal.
By applying a small touch of business practice in the lives of ordinary people, it can give them the necessary impetus for development. In this way, they will have a focus, action plan, and basic parameters to measure their actions. This will greatly improve their lives and achieve more life and professional success.
