Until you can handle money matters appropriately, you can't have a great relationship.
Just as love is an important issue when talking about relationships, so also is money. Money is the game changer. Sometimes, money could either make your spouse love you more or resent you. I know you'll want to argue that love built upon money, is not true love. But that's not the angle I'm coming from. It is very important to check someone's Financial responsibility before building your life around that person. For instance, if you have a partner who is lazy, selfish, secretive or wasteful, any of this trait could diminish the love you have for that person. Taking inappropriate money decisions often harm good relationships.
These tips will help prevent some relationships troubles associated with money.
Money and money related issues have caused a lot of problems for couples. Knowing how to control finances helps relationships become more enjoyable.
Don't keep secrets from your partner.
A lot of couples prefer not to talk about money as it brings up some sort of frictions. But that is not a good decision to make. Since good relationship involves good communication skills, money matters should also be well handled. Let your partner know about your debts, salary increase and other things. Trying to hide some of these things could cause trouble in future. Some people hide money from their partners for so many reasons. It could be because of the wasteful their partner's habit, or maybe they want to use it for something they wouldn't want their partner to know about. In this instance, building a relationship with someone who shares same money priorities with you is very important.
Don't put all the financial responsibilities on one person
Paying the bills should not be the responsibility of one person. Both parties should have something they are bringing to the table. Leaving all the expenses on one person might make him start feeling resentful or he could use the opportunity to become manipulative.
Don't envy your spouse
When your partner earns more than you, you don't have to get envious of it, rather celebrate his success together.
Don't be too hasty to merge your accounts
It's lovely and romantic to have a single account, but don't be hasty about it. Carefully observe the pros and cons that are involved with it before doing that. I'm not a fan of such idea. I prefer it when couples keep their personal accounts, then create a joint account for emergency or household bills.
Always save for rainy days.
To avoid a lot of future misunderstanding, adopt the saving habit. This would help prevent blames and bitterness when the unexpected expenses, job loss or other issues come up.
Conclusion
Happy and long-lasting relationships are built on honesty, trust and taking matured responsibilities. This should also extend to money issues. Financial responsibility, trust and honesty will help prevent a lot of pitfalls that trouble relationships.
