Whenever I get a free day or a holiday like this, I try not to treat it like “extra time” that needs to be filled with productivity. If anything, I see it as a small gift, a pause button, a chance to breathe properly before life hits the fast-forward button again.
Today, I’m dedicating a huge portion of my day to relaxation and leisure. No complicated plans, no pressure, just the simple decision to enjoy the quiet freedom of not being on a schedule. I’ve learned that rest isn’t something we earn only after we’ve exhausted ourselves. Sometimes, rest is the thing that keeps us from reaching that point in the first place.
I’m also heading out for some shopping later. Since it’s the New Year, I want to buy a few new things for myself, not because I’m chasing some dramatic “new year, new me” transformation, but because small upgrades can feel symbolic. A fresh shirt, a new pair of shoes, even something as simple as replacing old essentials can make the year feel like it’s starting with intention.
As Anne Lamott said, “Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.” And honestly, that’s the vibe I’m carrying today, unplugging a little, and letting myself enjoy it without guilt.
Here’s to welcoming the year softly, with rest, simple joys, and a few new items that make me feel ready.
