I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for a decade, and this sort of thing was par for the course. Bribing doctors to prescribe certain drugs has supposedly been cracked down on since the landmark ruling against Pfizer, but I'm sure the practice still goes on under the guise of educational conferences or other such events.
