One of the most significant things I have recognized in couples work is the need for individuals to “launch” from their family of origin and truly commit to creating a new world with their partner/spouse.
It comes down to asking yourself a very difficult question: Who are you married to? Your spouse, or your parents? Where does your emotional loyalty lie? Choosing a life partner is the most important decision you will ever make – far more crucial than choosing a job, house or group of friends. All the decisions you make will be together, you’ll have to sleep next to them every night and you’ll still have to love them when you’re both old and wrinkly.
If you knew then what you know now, what advice would you have given yourself about getting married and raising a family?
