"The world of ice giants," otherwise known as the famous Austrian landmark Aisrisenwelt, a natural limestone ice cave. It is located near the notable commune of Verfen, which is also popular due to the castle of Hohenwerfen. To see Eisrisenwelt, you will have to overcome a small path of 40 kilometers, the next south of Salzburg.
The Tennen mountains were formed during the Pleistocene, during the glaciation. The ridge has become one of the massifs and largest plateaus of the Austrian Alps, by "eating out" in lime softer rocks. Thus was formed and the cave Aisrisenvelt, located on the edge of this plateau. And although its total length is over 40 kilometers, visitors are allowed to inspect only 1 kilometer, which is covered with ice all year round.
For the first time Eisrizenwelt was officially opened in 1879 by Anton Pusselt, a scientist from Salzburg. Scientist-naturalist in this period was able to explore the first 200 meters of the cave. Prior to its opening, the cave was known to the locals, but they feared entering because they suspected that it was the entrance to the underworld. A year later, Posselt published a report on his discovery in the alpinist magazine, but soon forgot about Eisrisenwelt.
