Most people are hungry for communication that is honest, real, concise, clear and most important, respectful.
Communication is suffering in today’s fast-speed world, filled with time pressures, many distractions and technologies that create a distance between people. Behavior and habituated thoughts is what is considered as communication these days. Experts in communication believe that over reliance on technology is the key to sloppy communication. Less human interactions devalue and weaken communication.
People are losing the ability to connect face to face and even more, losing the desire to interact and connect face to face. Communication is a complex set of skills that take practice, patience and time. We can’t be better in communication unless we value it and make it important to us. We have to be conscious of what is driving us at a deeper level and enter into communication with our own feelings, needs, assumptions and expectations.
Here are some practice for conscious communication
Understand and know your intentions and motivations.
This is a technique that is efficiently used in acting classes. An actor knows where they are standing and what they are expected to say, otherwise, they will find themselves on auto-pilot and mess the entire play. It’s easier to enter into a communication with a clear intention than to muddle your way through a sloppy
communication.
Finding something to care about elevates the communication.
Being respective, honest, cooperative and fair are values that will help you to be more careful when communicating.
Become emotionally literate.
What you feel motivates how you communicate. If you are tired and frustrated, the way you talk will reflect the same, even when it’s not what you intend. If you are bitter and resentful, it will show up somewhere in your communication unless you clean it up.
Check your beliefs.
If you think the person you are talking to is a nudge, a slacker or lazy, expect this to be communicated somehow. Check your beliefs about the person you wish to communicate with to give meaning to your speech.
Be honest if you want to expect much in communication.
It’s very challenging to achieve conscious communication in the workplace. This is because we don’t believe we can truly be honest. Not necessarily hurtful, but real. Small white lies can really poison communication.
Create a trust meter.
Most people don’t have a kind of barometer to know why and how they trust. They can however tell you who they trust and don’t trust but the motive behind is always murky. Measure your trust levels and you’ll be good in conscious communication.
Listen and respect basic courtesy.
Everybody needs respect. Being courteous can be very powerful. Studies show that managers that praise and recognize their employee’s efforts, makes those employees very productive in a span of six months. Stress shuts down the thinking part of the brain while praise creates a safe cushion that elevates results.
Listen carefully by stopping to attend to yourself and focusing on your partner. Poor listening contributes to lost trust and miscommunication. These are habits that require time and commitment to master. For effective conscious communication become self-aware in general and be mindful in every interaction you face.
