It is very hot and humid, our place is a sauna. The little one is having trouble sleeping tonight, partly it is due to the weather but mostly because she is so excited before going to bed. She really loves having her uncle and aunty here and whenever they are out of sight asks where they are.
Since she was a tiny baby, she has fallen asleep to the sound of ocean waves that we play and now she looks forward to hearing them. They seem to calm her down.
I am sitting in here now as she is restless and trying to sleep and, they are making me sleepy too. I used to live next to a beach and at night I would open the door and listen to the waves crash on to the sand. I would listen for the patterns and try to pick out the larger waves. Every seventh.
On calm evenings, I would sit at a picnic table with a chemistry book with the intention to study but would end up just listening again. I am not a beach person but the sound of waves is hypnotic and reminded me of different times.
When I was young, I lived inland and there were no sounds but the occasional cricket chirping. However, when it rained heavily the drops hammered out its beats on the massive tin roof and the drone would seep into the mind and muscles to relax them both.
Now in an apartment building when it rains it is silent and there are no waves except those that emanate quietly from my daughter's room at night. Recently, she has been making sure that they go on before she gets into bed.
I wonder if later on in life, she will hear the ocean and feel connected like I do when I hear the roar of the rain on a tin roof.
Do you have sounds that remind you of periods in your life?
