'The Fish' threw the first game in Iceland, didn't play, saying the environment was unacceptable. He played the second game, had it won, but then suddenly handed it back to Spassky during the final moves [endgame] in what many believed was an amateurish blunder (not possible), leaving the kid from Brooklyn two games behind in the tournament.
Why did he give away the first two games? How did he know he would win the tournament so easily once he began to play? Questions the pundits could not answer at the time; but that didn't stop them from guessing wrong.
If you want to understand world politics you'll have to get beyond the puppet show.
