- You Have to Make a Plan.
When a city is built, it is done in stages, the most important of which is planning. Poor planning can result in all types of catastrophes: inefficient roadways, limited access to clean water, and/or heavy pollution. (We're looking at you Los Angeles!) The same principle applies to building a happy life. You need to identify and understand the things that cause your own catastrophes and come up with a plan of action to remedy them.
2.You Have to Demolish Some Existing Buildings.
It happens all the time in cities: Old run-down buildings are torn down to make room for more efficient modern ones. The same goes for developing a happier life. Bad habits can be like old buildings. They have a nostalgic allure that beckons you in but once you're inside you realize that the walls are filled with asbestos and painted with lead. Get rid of your old habits and replace them with new, healthier ones.
3.You'll Need to Burn Some Bridges.
In addition to getting rid of old buildings, building a city sometimes requires the destruction of old roadways. This is especially important if they are damaged beyond repair or lead nowhere. If you truly desire a happy life you have to cut toxic people out of your life. It is impossible to raise yourself up with people constantly trying to drag you down to their level!
4.Not All Construction is Forward Progress.
Just because it's new doesn't always mean it's better. Sometimes a highly anticipated construction project ends up being a terrible eyesore or causes unforeseen logistical issues. The same can be said for developing new habits and hobbies in search of a happier life. That diet you started or the new exercise routine you're trying may actually be doing more harm than good.
5.You Can't Do It All at Once
Rome wasn't built in a day, and you won't be either. A city has to have roads and sewers before they can start building skyscrapers and luxury condos. The infrastructure of a city is the foundation upon which the survival of the entire population rests, just like healthy daily routines and habits are the foundation for your sustained happiness. The construction of your happy life has to be done in stages. Make sure your foundation is solid before you build the next level!
