So I'll be getting back to my schedule later this week, but first, what I've been doing for the last few days.
Back towards the end of March I met Rustle (along with a bunch of other great people) and we decided to do a bit of a road trip so he could see some more of the countryside before leaving the country to see the world. There was a bit of a wait before I left for my trip, but Rustle was happy enough to wait around.
As we headed out of Adelaide on the 13th we had a great drive through the hills in the morning light, before getting onto the highway and racing out to the new track just past Tailem Bend. We weren't there for anything more than getting some fuel unfortunately, but it was great that they had cheaper fuel there than Adelaide (or anywhere prior to it. Tintinara continues to reign as the cheapest stop on the run to Melbourne). While there though I couldn't turn down a Moe's Hot Dog. Rustle just looked at me hoping for some leftovers, but without any forthcoming, he laughed at me when I spilled the caramelised onion down my top. I didn't get a photo, but I did get a New York dog, with the caramelised onion and cheese.
Moe's logo. They're one of the multiple options offered at some On The Run service stations in SA.
We were soon back on the road to where my intended morning tea stop was at Coonalpyn. The stop was partly to show Rustle the silos, but also so I could check out the waffle house just over the road and a little bit away from Adelaide from the silos. It was nice enough, but it wasn't a fresh hot waffle, but a cool pre-cooked one with some icing sugar and maple syrup. It certainly could have been better, and I'm glad I'd had the hot dog earlier, which I'm likely to have again. I may stop at this place again though, as they also do jaffles and they are both fresh and hot, and they smelled delicious for the couple that came out while I was eating.
Rustle looking out to the silos. Probably wondering why there aren't any birds painted on them
The waffle house is quite an unassuming location, but seemingly one of the benefits of the tourist attraction that is the silos as there are now at least 3 food locations along the road. This is the least obvious of them
The opening surrounded by a blackboard menu is very much expected from the setup, but it's simple and effective
Back on the road and we continued our eastern travels, crossing into Victoria and finally getting to Horsham a couple of hours later than my intended arrival time. I'm not really sure why the day was dragging along, but it was so there was much less time for stops for photos. Because of this I don't have a picture of Rustle as he met the big koala because we just drove through and he had to wave out the window.
It was almost too windy for Rustle to maintain his perch on my car's roof (he's clutching the aerial for support)
Time was running so short that my visit with a friend in Ballarat was shortened to just grabbing a quick coffee and chatting. Rustle stayed outside as he wasn't really too comfortable with the big bounding greyhound, or the lazy kitten either. We headed off towards Melbourne with the sun already well on it's way to sunset, with dinner at a shopping centre (Thailander), another friend stop to pick up some things, and eventually arriving at our accommodation for the next few days.
Rustle's continuing journey will return tomorrow, and you can keep up with him by following him (Rustle), where posts about him will appear as he travels the world.
