There were some bad fires in September 2017 in the Pacific Northwest. Oregon getting the worst of it. This was in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho which is about 30 minutes past Spokane, Washington. When I went to visit the skies were an eerie, foggy orange and the air smelled of smoke for a whole week. It cleared up a little for me on this sunset over the lake, but it was still so smokey.
