Scientists have been studying for a while what is called the "pill for men". Tests have been conducted already on animals and are promising. The next step is to test them on men.
Not many of us were waiting for such a pill, but it seems there are some guys interested in this kind of medicines. Looks like the Australian researchers have come to a formula that is both efficient and safe, but has no side effects on the long run.
"The pill focuses on two proteins that trigger sperm, effectively preventing sperm cells from leaving the body of the man."
In 2013 at the University of Monash they studied the effects of the pill on mice and now would be the moment to move their research on men. In the case of mice two proteins, the α1 adrenoceptor and P2X1-puricenoptor, can be safely neutralized leading to total infertility with no side effects on the sexual performance.
Sab Ventura, one of the researchers stated that "we are approaching the development of a non-hormonal, oral, convenient, safe and effective contraceptive that can be easily reversed". He also believes that "in developing a combination of two drugs that block the transport of sperm, but not to destroy their development or maturation" is the recipe for success.
There were other previous strategies in which they focused on hormonal targets or mechanisms that produce dysfunctional sperm, incapable of fertilization, but that might affect the sexual performance. With this new non-hormonal approach, sperm is not affected which means that once the contraceptive method is stopped everything comes to normal.
