The book of Psalms teaches us that the love of God (Agape), which is perfect and eternal, is the source of all hope in man. And the gift of hope is fundamentally the realization in the heart of man of this love that descends from on high, the love with which we rejoice in God in our hearts (contemplative activity), because this love is the love projected towards the whole creation of God, the expansive and benevolent love. And this love, more than a commandment, is a spiritual gift.
And the love of God that descends from the highest, is the result of the perfection of the fear of God in our hearts, the spirit of God can only dwell in a heart that rejects evil: "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man", Ecclesiastes 12:13.
This is how Psalm 33 teaches us how the love that comes from above is the source of the trust in God:
"Our soul waits for the LORD;
he is our help and our shield.
For our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.
Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us,
even as we hope in you" Psalm 33:20-22.
This Psalm was probably written by King David, and this great king is a good example of what it means to wait on God. David, tells us the Bible, first of all, was blessed with the grace of the spirit (1 Samuel 16:13); and it was by this grace, that is the source of the fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion), that David defeated the philistine Goliath, this was David's first great victory, this young man trusted and put his hope in the Lord and was not disappointed.
David was for this supernatural love a person guided by God, the Lord in moments of difficulty guided his steps and told him what actions to take to achieve victory. God manifested himself forcefully in David's life, and for this David was feared by all his enemies.
The sacred scriptures want to bless us and for that, they instruct us in the most perfect love, but for this to happen we must live in the fear of God and place our hope in divine mercy.
