The Book of Lamentations is a book that was probably composed by a Jewish survivor after the destruction of the city of Jerusalem, by the tyrant of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, approximately 600 years before Christ.
Jerusalem, an important city that connected the commercial trade between Africa and Asia, had been left in ruins as a queen turned into a slave. The Kingdom of Judah had sinned, and the judgment of the Lord announced by many prophets had arrived.
This is how the writer expressed his regret for the situation:
"Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?
Look around and see.
Is any suffering like my suffering
that was inflicted on me,
that the LORD brought on me
in the day of his fierce anger?" Lamentations 1:12.
But the book of Lamentations also speaks of the perfection of God, the Lord in his spiritual love (Agape) and mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) does not forget his people, the nation with which he made not one covenant but two, one with Abraham and another with David. That is why this book also gives rise to that hope that is never lost, because even in the face of destruction, those who fear God can expect the fruit of prosperity and a secure life.
In this way, the author of the book expressed his confidence in the Lord:
"Because of the LORD'S great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
I say to myself, ´The LORD is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.´" Lamentations 3:22-23.
But the mercy of God requires something from us. The author of the book continued with his teaching expressing that they should reexamine their conduct and return to the Lord:
"Let us examine our ways and test them,
and let us return to the LORD.
Let us lift up our hearts and our hands
to God in heaven, and say:
´We have sinned and rebelled
and you have not forgiven" Lamentations 3:40-42.
The Bible teaches us to never lose hope, even in the most difficult situations, because the Lord is always ready to forgive. But this also implies a change of attitude, if we continue on the path of error we cannot expect blessings, this is the message of the book, teach us about the ways of man and its consequences, and not instill fear and punish.
