Have you ever been paralyzed in fear, unsure of what steps to take because there are just TOO many options. Well, you are probably overthinking things, which will only stress you out and prevent you from accomplishing what you need to do. Here are a couple tips you can try applying to your life to help eliminate over thinking.
Don’t play the “what if game”
I know what you are thinking…. I’m just so creative, this is just a way to express my creativity by thinking about ten thousand ways this situation could go poorly. OKAY… NO. I’m going to stop you right there. “What if” is a dangerous place for your head to be. This is where our fake monsters and fears are hidden. Don’t waste your energy on it, it’s not worth it, trust me, I’ve been there.
Have perspective
Take a step back and look at your current situation in a broader lens. A good friend once told me, “when I’m freaking out, I think to myself, does it affect me today? In a week? In a month? In 5 years?” If the answer is that this issue you are currently having will not matter in a couple days, then you know you need to chill out! It’s okay, you’re probably overacting and it is not worth all that energy.
Give yourself a short deadline
When you are paralyzed by choice, sometimes it is easiest when you know you have a time limit to decide. Once the decision is made, move on and don’t look back. You made the best decision with the knowledge you currently had, so no regrets!
Exercise
Physical activity releases endorphins and can help you to stop rethinking situations over and over. You will feel better and release tension that you have been holding onto.
Be aware
When you are overthinking a situation, the only way to stop it is to realize you are doing it in the first place. When things start feeling complicated, check yourself. Tell yourself to keep it simple. Apply all the tips above, and hopefully you will be well on your way to simplicity!
