Between work, bills, chores and all of the “in-between” activity, it’s easy to be consumed by the day to day shuffle. It can feel quite disorienting. So, in an effort to promote grounding and foster positive growth, I find it beneficial to get back to the basics.
Let’s look at a plant.
Although I am far from a green-thumb, I’ve watched my plant whisperer husband rear an innumerable amount.
What does a plant need to grow and thrive?
1.) Warmth and Light
For the intents and purposes of our topic today, we’ll say that this represents loving presence and affection.
In a day to day sense, this can include physical embraces like hugs and kisses, but can also translate into a surprise love note, a brewed cup of coffee or a freshly fluffed pillow . It’s “love language”. Essentially, what speaks to the person on a deeper level and let’s them know that you love and care for them.
2.) Water
We will compare this vital element to communication. A huge, and often neglected step, in a relationship. Communication can be in the form of spoken words, written text or even body language. You need to immerse yourself in the other; knowing their likes/dislikes, dreams, goals and aspirations. Although you don’t always have to understand or agree with their viewpoints, it’s of utmost importance that you continue to “water” (or communicate) where you are in life and your desired direction.
3.) Fertile Soil
Perhaps I should have led with this one, but I happen to believe that with enough Light (Love) and Water (Communication), you can create a rich and fertile environment. So, for this element, I am referring to metaphysical environment and emotional health. A relationship needs a foundation that fosters support, trust as well as growth and expansion. This requires that each part (or person for that matter) look inward for assessment. “Soil amendments”, or personal improvements, are a necessary part of maintaining a healthy and thriving environment.
4.) Balance
Ahhhh, balance...
This is in regards to time, energy and the giving of oneself. This may be the hardest one of them all.
It’s absolutely vital that you take a step back and evaluate what you are giving and what you are taking. Also, where you are giving it.
Me, I’ll admit it, I spend entirely too much time on my phone and on the day to day “stuff”. It’s a bad habit, and something I’m going to actively work on remedying.
On the flip side, you need to ensure that you take time for yourself. In order to maintain that fertile soil, as aforementioned, you have to take time to fulfill your soul desires, while working to help your partner fulfill theirs. It can be tricky, but balance is what ties everything together.
So, this sounds like a lot of work, right?
It is!
But, guess what?
The reward is worth it!
The best advice, which I shall take and put into practice myself, is to be mindful. Take a few minutes each day to think about these things.
Give lots of light (love), a healthy serving of water (communication), in fertile soil (a healthy environment) with a focus on balance and you are on the right path to a beautiful relationship.
*Remember, though, you are always a work in progress.
16 years and counting :)
