Auntie Patricia taught me the waltz
I had my 38th solar return today and unlike most of my previous adult birthdays this one won't soon be forgotten. I decided to celebrate my special day by visiting an old folks home where the residents all stay without any charges for food, clothing, and in this case entertainment. The only stipulation is that the residents have no children. This is a wonderful and heart warming living situation for the Chinese Malaysians but being that they don't have kids and grandkids they lack the love and affection of typically large Asian families.
So I joined a group that donates food and gifts to share with these beautiful well seasoned folks regularly. Since it was my birthday and my first visit I brought a massive carrot cake. The cake had "Happy birthday gwailou" written on it. gwailou means "whitey" 😜 Everyone thought it was hilarious and knew by that frosting that I like to party.!
I was treated with not one happy birthday song but 4 renditions in different languages. I honestly was having a blast just hanging out until they broke out the karaoke and kicked things up a notch.
I had no clue what to sing but it was clear I wasn't being given an option so I picked one of my favourite songs of all time, What a wonderful world. You can't see it in the video as I'm a consumate semi professional musician, but I was getting choked up as the surreal experience was flooding me with unexpected emotions.
Being 10,000 miles away from my homeland can be overwhelming at times, especially during holidays and birthdays but this party took the cake and left me overflowing with love and friendship. I can't recall ever having so many people wish me well and bless me in all of my life. There is no chance I'll ever be able to recreate this one off event of a lifetime and I'll cherish the memories as long as I live. Thankfully for you guys I have video footage of my performance. Enjoy!
Much love and may you all know the joy of giving and receiving in gratitude and abundance..
