On occasion I drive for Uber and Lyft. Today I took a ride request that I should have ignored. The Lyft rideshare company sent me a ride request that was 14 miles away.
I would have ignored this ride but it was part of their new GoGoGrandparent program and it appeared to be in such a remote area that the likelyhood of someone else being available for them was remote. So I took the ride request. Well it was way out hwy 316 in Winder Georgia. I was in Dacuala when I got the request. I started out and got 6 miles up the road and the user canceled the ride request. So I drive another mile up the road to the nearest place to turn around on hwy 316 to head back to my home area.
I drive about 2 miles back and got behind a big rig. I started to pass when from underneath I saw what appeared to be a large tie rod come flipping towards me. I tried to swerve away from it fearing it may come through my windshield. I guess I got lucky? As I avoided having it smash my windshield it still managed to get under my car just as the left rear tire was passing. Well it shredded my tire and manage to also flip up and rip the bumper off of my 2012 Hybrid Toyota Camry.
Well the new tire cost me $147.50. That's a full day of rideshare to make that up.
I was going to buy more Bitcoin with it. Not now.
I managed to re-attach the bumper while I was putting the spare tire on. I keep a tool kit in my vehicle and was able to put a new mount hole in the bumper plastic and adjust the mounting bracket so that the hole would line up with the original mounting screw. I guess it will hold permanently but I still have a 3 inch tear in the bumper near where the exhaust pipe comes out.
Really a bad day. But I lived.
