There are some things that could be verified by local people.

• For instance, News is reporting it, but I don't really know for sure if there is a hurricane pounding the east coast or a typhoon pounding the Philippines. But if someone local could verify that, then I would know for sure.
  • But then you run into the problem of people paid to pretend they are people they are not and bots pretending to be people, so I guess that verification is only as good as the verification that this person is an actual person. A reliable actual person...

And that system would only work for real world news.
