Uzumaki gets a 4/5 from me! It's messed up, grotesque, but also morbidly captivating. The illustrations are genuinely terrifying and out of this world, and they were what kept me going. I wanted to see how far Junji would go, how vile his monsters of art could become, and needless to say I've had my fill. If we're talking about Uzumaki in terms of the three volumes, I'd say Vol 1 and 2 is his best work, and Vol 3 could have been slightly better (it's the volume with the hurricanes). There were some funny moments too, which I didn't expect in a horror story.
The top 3 messed up moments for me were: 1. Shuichi's dad crushing himself into a spiral to fit into a tub....I don't think I'll ever forget that because it set the tone for the rest of the story. 2. Just anything to do with those damn snails. The mating scene followed by the three guys feasting on their friend is by far the worst of them all. 3. The whole pregnant mothers' arc. People eating the placenta mushrooms and the baby being stitched back up into the womb was so gross.
