As a child of the 1960s, I am well aware of the impact young people can have on social issues. Certainly, we did a lot to add to the conversations about civil rights and Vietnam which resulted in change.
I had reached the point where I believed subsequent generations had become apathetic and willing to accept things as they are. The recent school shooting in Parkland Florida may be the event to prove me wrong. Did we wake up the children? Do they have the revolutionary spirit of the 60s? I must admit I have been impressed with many of the youth who experienced this horrific event. They have shown passion and maturity and the ability to articulate their feelings in a very adult way.
I don't want this post to get into a political discussion of the pros and cons of gun control, but I must say that as an American I am saddened that we have reached the point where we are talking about arming teachers so they can protect their students. This is a sad commentary on what our society has become.
