In 2008 Dräger develops the first drug testing system for saliva samples the Dräger DrugTest 5000.

Drug use is a social reality. Many people cannot and no longer want to go without the mind-altering kick, even though it may be at the cost of their health sooner or later. According to a recent report published by the Federal Government, one in four Germans aged between 18 and 64 has used cannabis; 319,000 German citizens are dependent on illegal drugs. The accident statistics
from the Federal Statistics Office are also very clear: in 2013 no less than 3,896 road accidents involved people under the influence of drugs; 1,913 people were injured, 457 of them seriously. Several dozen people died because they or others had taken drugs shortly beforehand.
If law enforcement officers wish to test a person’s fitness to drive, it has to be done quickly and the test must provide information about the current situation. “The police have to measure drug use at that moment in time, not past use,” says Rainer Polzius, responsible for the development of the DrugTest 5000 at Dräger.
“It’s not about establishing whether a driver was fit to drive yesterday or last week, but whether they are fit to drive now!” The device tests saliva and not blood or urine. Drugs do not last long in saliva, but can be detected in urine for a considerably longer period of time. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) COOH (carboxylic acid), the main metabolite of THC, can even be traced weeks later. Saliva, on the other hand, is easy to obtain during a roadside test. In addition, the sample cannot be manipulated – any attempt at deception would be immediately noticed.
Our Concerns
In 2013 the company preformed a study on the device titled Evaluation of the on site Draeger DrugTest 5000 in occasional and chronic frequent smokers following controlled cannabis smoking Source Link
- The test had a total participation of twenety-four (24) people age 18-45.
- One cannabis cigarette with the following chemical breakdown was consumed within a ten (10) minute time frame; 6.8±0.2% (54 mg) THC, 0.25±0.08 cannabidiol (CBD) , and 0.21±0.02% cannabinol (CBN)
- The study consisted of a three day, two-night stay on a closed clinical research unit.
- Not only was THC and 11-OH-THC, tested for but also THCCOOH, CBN, and CBD
- Three frequent smokers were still positive at 30h, but had up to 5 negative specimens prior to 30h.
- Frequent smoker observations; Ingested 6.8±0.2% (54 mg)THC observed 42.5-48.8%, 11-OH-THC, 43.5-54.5%, THCCOOH, 68.1-86.2%
NOTE: the point here is that THCCOOH is the compound produced by the body and does not have any psychoactive effects in its own right and a long half life of days and sometimes weeks. This seems to be a clear diversion from the original statement from Dräger."It’s not about establishing whether a driver was fit to drive yesterday or last week, but whether they are fit to drive now!"
Healthline posted the following based on a study published and online at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ The National Center for Biotechnology Information, a division of the National Institute of Health
Link to the study titled; Current Knowledge on Cannabinoids in Oral Fluid
Saliva testing
According to a 2014 review on cannabinoids in oral fluid, weed is detectable in saliva for the following amounts of time after last use:
Occasional users: 1 to 3 days
Chronic users: 1 to 29 days
Final note; Also in our concern corner we know that the Agents Of The Government would would never misuse the DNA that is collected during this test procedure, but that is a topic for another time.
