Outer Space is, less and less, a strange place for humanity. After the fascination that it caused a couple of generations ago, the first part of the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States, Space is today a resource that we use daily.
Yes, I refer to Space as a resource, because it is an element that we take advantage of to satisfy needs, GPS navigation, instant international communications, climate monitoring and security in our countries, depends largely on the use of an infrastructure found in Space.
At the same time, a significant number of countries allocate huge amounts of financial resources and many of the brightest minds in understanding space as well as knowing its potentialities. It's the same drive that has led investors to risk their money on space adventures.
That is why from all countries it is necessary to develop a policy in this regard, from the efforts in the relevant international organizations to the investment and creation of research programs destined to such an effort, and this effort must be made especially from the global south. .
All developed countries have space programs that include the placement and manufacture of satellites and, to varying degrees, the training, and launching of astronauts, either in short-term missions or for a long stay on the International Space Station, they develop technology, research and they install technical capacities for their economic use.
In the traditional global south, we focus on more earthly issues such as food, health, and others that are urgent for the lives of millions of people and make both citizens and decision-makers consider the cosmos as a place alien to them, ignoring the profaning the impact it has on our lives today and the one it will have in the future.
Not only because it makes us dependent on the services provided, but because there are already plans to use the space as a source of mineral resources that will be, in a matter of decades, technologically accessible at an economically reasonable cost. Making space a threat to many economies that today depend on extractivism.
Therefore, from the global south, there is an urgent need for the development of training plans in science and technology that helps to generate companies and efforts to adapt the economy to such challenges, freeing more and more people from poverty in an economy that no longer It will be confined to our, until now, only home.
