And both of these views are valid. Mayweather’s fights may appear boring because he is such a defensive boxer, and doesn’t put on a show unless he feels he may lose. And what’s truly infuriating as a fan is that when Floyd does decide to stand and trade, he is one of the most entertaining boxers in the game.
However, if you take out the emotions, something hard to do while first watching a fight, if you take out the emotions, than Mayweather’s defensive style is…if not entertaining, than at least highly impressive. Floyd’s strength lies in taking away his opponents best weapon and then fighting his kind of fight, gradually ramping up his aggressiveness as his opponent gets frustrated and worn out.
Looking at the sparring footage McGregor recently released, it seems like he plans to immobilize Mayweather by controlling his head and arms, and cutting him off with lateral movement. This is a solid idea.
But, unfortunately for McGregor, Floyd has dealt with this tactic before.
