This week, the media Street Press (www.streetpress.com) announced that its readers are going to pay for content in a new way.
The Game Changer :
While everybody are more and more surrounded by advertising in its life and intrusive pop ups on the internet, this media thought about setting up a new revenue income method.
As Street Press founder's saying : "Here is what we will do this week: We will offer our readers, while they read a report or an investigation on the site, that their computer works ... for the media. We will pool a small portion of the power of each of our users' computers, to perform calculations that will pay StreetPress.
In technical language, the computers of our readers will "mine" a cryptocurrency, the MONERO. The principle of decentralized currencies, like bitcoin, is that transactions are verified by computers - and the calculations made for this purpose by these computers are remunerated in cryptocurrency ." 💡😎
Would it be working for all medias?
My answer is no.
Indeed, it's difficult to imagine some short news website taking the most of mining a cryptocurrency.
And as you need a significant to mine something valuable, only the medias with long articles as investigations or portait will be winning.
What to think it about it?
Of course, you're owner of your thoughts. But first, remember that it will empower the medias' consumers to pay for what they really read.
Although, it's also just an offset of outcome as you will pay with you electricity bill and your CPU.
In favor or not, we can assume that it's far more than a new business model for medias, but above all, a new way to live for the free press.
