PROGRAMMING OF THE ROUTE

When embarking on a journey, it is advisable to take into account temporary considerations, such as when leaving, for how long, and when planning to return. Each trip affects the subsequent ones, as the traveler strengthens, becoming more resistant and an expert.

In meditation there are very rare, and fortunate, cases of beginners who can practice thirty seconds without interruption. Most are amazed at how little time they are able to concentrate without being distracted. To begin, the first week is usually more than enough to meditate twice a day for five minutes. You don't have to force yourself, otherwise, as when it comes to doing more than you are capable of, meditation can be a frustrating experience.
After practicing more or less a week in two periods of five minutes a day, it can be increased to ten minutes. And later they can be fifteen or even twenty minutes per period. For many, ten minutes is enough, but each must determine what is best for him or her and the time he or she needs to get the maximum benefit from the exercise. Some will have to make a personal commitment between the time they devote to meditation and the time they have for themselves.

It is also important that the practice lasts the same every day, not five minutes one day, another day twenty, and the next day ten. If occasionally you want to meditate longer than usual, it is not advisable to do it often, if not in several periods. If we blur the time of meditation we can become left behind and lose control over mental activities, instead of increasing it. It is as important to control what the mind does, as when it does.

When you have been practicing the techniques for months or years, sometimes you want to meditate longer. This occurs especially when you go through a process of transformation, and finally overcome several stages of resistance. At that point, the practice can fill and satisfy so much that you want to meditate longer. If you want to spend many hours meditating, seriously ask yourself if what you are really looking for is to escape from life, instead of looking for a practice that will help you to live in the world in a fuller and more constructive way. If the answer is clearly ¨No, then you should probably meditate at that time as much as you like. You should also consider whether this allows you to properly fulfill your daily tasks.
It is possible that after meditating for months, or years, you want to extend your time of meditation, so that if before it seemed good to practice ten minutes, now prefers to be twenty, half an hour and even more. What really matters is quality, not quantity. Ten minutes of total concentration, with the body relaxed, are worth more than an hour with the mind lost.

Many people do well to practice regularly at the same time each day. This encourages the habit of meditation, and you can even adopt this method yourself.
